Should I be concerned about gum disease?

Quite frankly, everyone should be concerned about gum disease. It starts when plaque builds up below the gum line. The plaque hardens, wedges between teeth and gums, and releases toxins. Studies show that 80% of Americans have some form of gum disease. If caught early, gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed. In its later stages, gum disease (periodontitis) can lead to tooth loss, bone loss, and other health complications, including increased risk of heart disease and type II diabetes. What causes tooth sensitivity?

Several factors can contribute to sensitive teeth. The most common causes are decay, fractures, and bruxism (teeth grinding). Many patients clench grind their teeth at night and don’t even realize it. The result can be chronic headaches, tooth pain, worn-away teeth, and gum recession. If Dr. Putt finds that you grind your teeth, he can create a custom nightguard that will align your teeth properly and prevent the damage caused by grinding.
